Eat to Live, 6 Week Plan, Week 2, Day 1
Well, we made it through week 1! It wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be. I had a few cravings. One day at work a co-worker was eating a french dip sandwich for lunch and it really looked good! Last night was probably the hardest though. Megan made something for dinner for us that we both thought sounded good, but when we tried it, I thought it was awful. It literally looked like baby poop, and it tasted terrible! It didn't make it any easier that our two friends that were over had a hot pizza in the oven. The smell was overpowering. That was tough. I ended up having a salad, and after I had eaten it and wasn't so hungry, the craving wasn't so bad.
We didn't start following Eat to Live's 6 week plan until Saturday night of last week. As of this morning, I have lost 7.6 lbs. I weighed myself last Saturday Morning and came in at 264.7 lbs. This morning I weighed 257.1 lbs. I was hoping I had lost 4 lbs but expected it to be more like 2 - 3 lbs. I was pleasantly surprised to see that I had lost almost 8 lbs in one week. My fat mass went from 42.67% to 44.96%, and my lean mass went from 57.33% to 55.04%. All of these measurements are from my Withings scale.
The fat/lean mass measurements are headed in the wrong direction. I'm not sure if this is an issue with the way the scale measures body mass or if something else is going on, but I'm not going to be too concerned about just one reading. In his book, Dr. Fuhrman said that people who are obesely overweight like me should first focus on eating healthily and the weight will come off. Once that does, then start exercising. With some of my health issues (plantar fasciitis, back pain, sciatica, etc.,) I think this will actually be better for me. I've made several attempts to exercise and have only injured myself each time. Already, I find I am moving more and have more energy, so I think he's got a point.
Two other things worth mentioning, I was probably a little paranoid this first week about making sure I didn't go hungry. I noticed several times I was eating more than usual to make sure I was full and that I wouldn't be hungry later. One of the downsides to eating lighter is you don't feel full in the same way. This will probably stop as I adjust to this new way of eating. I've also probably eaten a lot more protein than I need to because I've been worried that my salad wouldn't keep me full so I've added more beans and nuts to my diet than I probably needed to.
I'm not sure what to call this style of eating. A diet plan? A new way of eating? It isn't about counting calories or dieting. It's about eating more healthily, and your body naturally resets your weight over time to your ideal weight for most people because you are eating foods that are nutrient dense and calorie poor instead of foods that are calorie dense and nutrient poor. It is a different way of looking at food and takes some getting used to. It is radically different than the typical American diet.
This is what I had for breakfast this morning. It is called Quick Banana Walnut Breakfast. It was very tasty. I like how it has fruit, nuts and flax seeds in a tasty mix. I could eat this several times a week. It was nice to eat something other than oatmeal for breakfast.
Megan had Chia Seed Breakfast Pudding. It was tasty too, but I liked mine better. The Chia seeds really do make a kind of pudding, which seems a little weird for seeds to make a pudding, but it tastes good.
This was our lunch today, Bean Enchiladas and Papaya with Lime. The bean enchiladas were made with pinto beans, bell peppers, corn, onions, and tomato paste. I would use fewer bell peppers next time, more beans and put some salsa in. The lime gave the papaya a zesty flavor and worked well.
This was dinner tonight. Quick and Spicy Tomato Bisque with Crispy Mushroom Fries. We didn't have chickpea flour so we used graham flour on the mushrooms. You roll the mushrooms in a mixture of cornmeal, nutritional yeast, cut up roasted almonds, chia seeds, onion powder, garlic powder and black pepper. The soup was too spicy for Megan but I liked it. We both liked the mushrooms. Megan wanted the whole plate.
